What’s the Big Deal About Hunger or Food Insecurity!

Choice Number 1 or Choice Number 2

If you were forced to choose between paying rent/ mortgage and sacrificing a healthy meal for a few days, which would you choose? If you were forced to choose between vacationing in Florida or in California, which would you choose?  Most of us would rather have the preference of choosing between vacationing spots rather than choosing between paying for shelter or food.

At this moment, there is a working mother who’s struggling with the choice of having “a roof over her children’s heads” or having her children go hungry for a few more nights.  She’s not alone in this crisis because many are hard-working adults, children and seniors who simply cannot make ends meet are a part of the growing group. They struggle with food insecurity, meaning they do not know where their next meal is coming from (definition source: Feeding America).

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 16.7 million children in the United States lack regular access to nutritious foods. In Maryland, more than 20% of all households struggle to provide regular, healthy meals for their children, and nearly 10% off all Maryland citizens live below the poverty line.

Hunger is a Robber

From Walt Disney to Nelson Mandela to your favorite politician has quoted and recognized in one form or the other that the minds of our children are our greatest/valuable natural resource.

Research has shown that food insecurity and hunger are serious threats to these natural resources—our children’s health, growth and development.

We, Hunger 4 Humanity, believe the nation’s economic growth depends on the well-being of our children.  As a result, the existence of childhood hunger in the US threatens the future of our nation’s prosperity.
